Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription Sunglasses at Our Lawrenceville Optometry Center

Sunglasses may be the most important accessory you ever wear, at least where your eyesight is concerned. A high-quality pair of sunglasses can block 100 prevent of harmful UV rays, helping to protect you against a number of serious eye and vision problems. But if you also have a refractive error such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness or presbyopia, you'll also want to investigate the world of prescription sunglasses. Our optometry center, Brookwood Eyecare, is happy to fit you with sunglasses that look beautiful, protect your eyes the way they should, and correct your vision as accurately as possible.

Why Sunglasses Are So Important

Sunglasses should be considered mandatory whenever you're out and about during the daytime. That's because ultraviolet (UV) rays can do devastating harm by promoting cataracts, macular degeneration, eyelid cancer and photokeratitis (an irritating "burn" on the eye). UV is a risk even on overcast days; in fact, clouds can actually intensify the radiation by reflecting the rays off their surfaces. But dark lenses alone won't protect your from this danger -- you must make certain that your sunglasses are rated UV 400, which means that they block the entire ultraviolet spectrum.

If you need corrective lenses, the next challenge is how to enjoy both UV/glare protection and accurate vision correction at the same time. Contact lens wearers may be tempted simply to wear non-prescription contacts over their sunglasses, but this isn't wise if you plan on going into the water. Clip-on and fit over shades add extra bulk, irritating your nose, and may even introduce a degree of optical distortion. This leaves prescription sunglasses as the sensible option.

Healthy, Stylish Options From Our Optometrist at Brookwood Eyecare

Our optometrist at Brookwood Eyecare, Dr. Birdsong, can help you obtain prescription eyeglasses that offer the same clarity and precision as you'll find in our other types of eyeglasses. Even presbyopia poses no difficulties since we can make bifocal, trifocal or "progressive" multifocal sunglasses that suit your prescription perfectly. You'll also love the dazzling selection of designer frames we can fit those lenses into!

If you're concerned about having to carry a second pair of glasses around with you, why not combine your eyeglasses and sunglasses into a single product? Our optometrist can provide photochromic or "transition" lenses that naturally grow darker when exposed to UV rays, lightening again once you're out of the sunlight. But please note that the UV filters added to car windshields may mean that your photochromic lenses don't get sufficiently dark inside the car. Prescription sunglasses may make better driving glasses, while you can still enjoy the convenience of using a pair of photochromic glasses the rest of the time.
